چکیده

The aim of our current research is to investigate the possibility of using likelihood ratios to perform utterance verification within the context of automatic oral proficiency assessment. The likelihood ratios under investigation have the appealing feature that they may be computed simply by using an off-theshelf automatic speech recognition system in two different recognition modes (forced and free phone) instead of using a system with specifically trained anti-models. We achieved 93% correct classification for 10 phonetically rich sentences uttered by 60 non-native language students.

Unit selection synthesis database development using utterance verification

Accurate annotation of the unit inventory database is of vital importance to the quality of unit selection text-to-speech synthesis. The time consuming manual work involved in database development limits the ability to produce new voices quickly and at low cost. Automatic annotation is therefore more and more in use. Misalignments due to mismatch between the predicted and pronounced unit sequen...

Utterance Verification Using State-Level Log-Likelihood Ratio with Frame and State Selection

This paper suggests utterance verification system using state-level log-likelihood ratio with frame and state selection. We use hidden Markov models for speech recognition and utterance verification as acoustic models and anti-phone models. The hidden Markov models have three states and each state represents different characteristics of a phone. Thus we propose an algorithm to compute state-lev...

Estimation of children's reading ability by fusion of automatic pronunciation verification and fluency detection

Pronunciation verification of children’s reading is a difficult task in itself, but automatic reading assessment software must also detect and evaluate other phenomena that influence human evaluators. Using an isolated word-reading task, we first show that humans use both pronunciation correctness (accuracy) and fluency information in their assessment of the reading ability of kindergarten to s...

Applying speech verification to a large data base of German to obtain a statistical survey about rules of pronunciation

In this paper we present a new research project to obtain a statistical survey of the pronunciation of German using an automatic system for segmentation and labeling of speech data and a very large data base of spoken German (GermAn Spoken in Public, GASP). It mainly involves the development of two components: a) An automatic system of speech veriication (PHONSEG) which produces a seg-mentation...

Assessment of dutch pronunciation by means of automatic speech recognition technology

Experiments were carried out to determine whether log-likelihood ratios (LRs) can be employed to improve automatic assessment of Dutch pronunciation. Read speech of natives and non-natives was judged by three groups of expert raters and was then analyzed by means of a continuous speech recognizer. Three automatic measures were calculated, two LRs and rate of speech (ros), and then compared with...
